Audrey's Birthday cake

This cake was made for her birthday party at home. Like all the other girls, Audrey loves fairy tales especially princess' stories. Her stories always start with 'Once upon a time' and ended with 'Live happily ever afer'. She wishes she can be a princess one day...she always be our little princess. A little princess that loved by her mum and dad.

Audrey wanted a snow white cake but minus the evil queen and the magic mirror. I was so enjoyed making this cake. I started the decorations about a week before her birthday. There 7 dwarfs in the cake: Doc, Bashful, Happy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy and Doopey. I love Doopey...I think he is the cutest.

The cake was a passion fruit cake filled with passion fruit curd and covered with buttercream then decorated with fondant. All the details and trimmings were in fondant. On the side of the house was a magical tree with Audrey's favourite bird nesting on top.

All the princess' stories were just fairy tales but love is always real and true. We always love you our little princess...

Audrey's Birthday Cupcakes

Another birthday for my little girl...time really flies. I still can remember when she was a baby, I used to carry her everywhere I went. Now, she is too heavy for me to carry...she has grown and I'm old :-) Audrey is now 4...she is no longer a baby. She is now a little girl that goes to kinder and will be a school girl next year. These were the cupcakes that I made for her kinder's birthday.

Audrey always wants a pet especially rabbit but we think she is still to young to care for a pet. So we made a deal, pets cupcakes for this year not real pet.

The cupcakes were vanilla flavour and all the pets decorations were edible. I made 4 different kinds of pets; rabbits, cats, snakes and birds. Audrey loves them and her favourite one is the bird and she still keep her in a display box. Happy Birthday, baby girl....

Puppy cake

This is the view of the other side of the Ben10 cake. The theme was puppy with purple as the main colour. All the decorations were in fondant.

I made 2 puppy, 1 boy and 1 girl playing with their bones. The girl puppy was scratching her head. The cake board was decorated in polka dots with 2 different tones of purple.

This little birdie sitting in a bowl was inspired by 'Littlest pet shop' toy. I really love Littlest pet shop toy, they are really cute. Now I'm planning to make more Littlest pet shop decorations...maybe for Audrey's birthday...

Ben10 cake

This Ben10 cake was a cake for a Ben10 fan who was turning 5. He loves Ben10 so much that he wears Ben10 stuffs everyday...he is so cute.

Nic shares the same birthday with Rachel, this year they celebrated their birthday together. They wanted different themes on the cake but we only wanted a small cake. So I came out with a design of half 'Ben10' and half 'puppy theme'.

The cake was lemon sponge filled with lemon curd and lemon buttercream then covered in fondant. The decorations were made few days ahead so they were completely dry. I cut out Ben10 lettering in black fondant and sticked them onto a neon green backing. Once they were dry, I stucked the piece onto the back of the puppy hut. For the final decorations I finished up the cake with plaque bubbles in neon green. The plaque bubbles were crawling onto the cake and some started to form an alien.

Happy Chinese New Year

These cupcakes were for chinese new year celebration at church. The cupcakes were lemon sponge dipped in lemon jelly and lemoncello then covered in fondant. The rabbits represent the year of rabbit...very straight forward...:-)

Wedding cake

It was a long long break from blogging...I'm all refreshed and ready to start another year with more bakings and decoratings.
Last December, I took a challenging project...it was a huge wedding cake. The cake was dummy in 16" 13" and 10" with 6" high. It was a really hard work...covering a huge cake is not an easy job. It harder than you can imagine. When I took on the project, I thought It wouldn't be too hard. But it was so hard that I got sick of fondant. I was so sick that I didn't even want to touch and smell fondant for almost 2 months...but now I'm back with more fondant works...hehehe still love decorating so much that I just can't get sick enough to throw everythings away.

I used styro dummies for the cake. Using royal icing I stick 2 dummies together to get the height that I wanted then covered in fondant. The bride and groom really like simple and modern cake, so I created this cake with quilted layer in the middle and ivory satin ribbon.

The intial JC was made of cardboard with sparkling powder.

The bride and groom figurine were fondant. It is not easy working with black fondant, it is too soft and sticky and harder to dry. For black fondant, I suggest mix it with chocolate fondant so it won't be too sticky.

Hard work pays off, everyone was happy with the cake. I really want to thank my hubby for helping me with kneading and rolling the fondant...THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS BE THERE WHEN I NEED YOU...

Sporty girl figurine

Sam requested this figurine for his classmate. This little girl likes tennis and birds so I made her a cake topper wiith sporty approached. She is wearing tennis outfit with a sport's bag carrying her tennis racket and a towel. She is looking at a bird nest next to her. Enjoy your birthday girl...

Cake of appreciations

This was a thank you cake from a doctor to his nurses, they are in IVF unit in Royal Women Hospital. I thought IVF always have to do with babies so created a cake with a lady holding a new born baby.

Daisy represents new life and brighter days. For some couples that cannot conceive naturally, IVF is a great opportunity for them to have their own children.

I wanted the cake to be simple and elegant so I used simple decorations and minimal colour combinations. Hope everyone enjoyed the cake.

Christening cake

This is a christening cake for little girl. Her lovely grandma wanted to have a book cake with baby booties. The cake was mud cake covered with dark chocolate ganache and decorated in fondant.

Pink booties in fondant decorated with pink ribbon and flowers.

The baby, giraffe and elephant are fondant.

Ben10 & Cars Cupcakes

In my childhood, Mickey mouse and Donald duck were the favourite cartoon characters. Now, Ben10 is one of the favourite. A young boy with special powers to become a superhero and save the world...dream of every boys. These cupcakes were for a 6 years old boy who loves Ben10. With a help from my son, I made 3 different Ben10 characters. Sam told me which colours were the closest to the characters and small details like the spots and horns. Sometimes, Sam was a great helper...he has the eyes of details and he fulls of imaginations. Thanks Babe...

The cupcakes were chocolate cakes with fondant decorations.

I also mixed the Ben10 characters with somethings more gentle and cute. I made cars, buses and trucks in cute version which are more suitable for younger boys and girls guests. Sparkling eyes and big smiles...those are the most favourite characters that we love to see in children.

Battle of the sexes

These were cupcakes that I made for 2010 Election day cake stall for the kinder and the school. This year election was battle of the sexes...battle between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbot (the 2 strongest party). I have no preference so I thought making cupcakes that have 2 different sexes would be fun.

cupcakes of boys and girls, male and female elephants, male and female pigs and the last ones were high heels cupcakes vs tie cupcakes. Now I have my preference, I really like the female elephant and pig because they have long and curly eyelash that make them look really cute and sweet. But still not too sure which party should win...:-) Do you have your choice yet?

My shoes collections

I just can't get enough with shoes...since I made the first shoe couple months ago, I get addicted. This time I made much smaller shoes so they can go into my collection shelf. Firstly, I cut out a cardboard template that I've drawn. Then roll out the black fondant to about 3mm thick , with sharp knife trace the template later cut them out. Put them aside. roll out 2 small balls for the heels then shape them. Using water, glue the heels onto the cut out shoes' bases. Turn the shoes around and shape the heel, let them dry for few minutes. Prepare your shoes design by cutting out any shape, colour and pattern that you like.

Making shoes are great fun and they look great as decorations on cupcakes and as edible collections.

Hubby's birthday

It had already been 1 month since hubby's birthday and now I have time to write on my blog. This year's winter is horrible...full of illnesses...my family (the kids and me) get sick all the time. It's like playing soccer
where you keep passing the ball around and around and never stop. Around hubby's birthday, Audrey and Sam got really sick so we didn't really celebrate. We just had simple 'seafood dinner' (hubby's favourite)...I made him some cookies bouquet since he didn't feel like having cake. With cookies, they have longer shelf life so we can keep them until everyone gets better.

For these cookies, I used simple butter cookies with orange flavour and decorated with fondant. Flowers are quite feminine so I used more masculine colour by combining dark violet with light violet and white. Cookies bouquet makes a really good birthday gift or even a valentine's gift.

I felt really bad not making hubby a birthday cake so on the weekend folowing his birthday, I made him his favourite mango cake. I used a cake recipe from the book that my mum bought me and iced the cake with chopped fresh mango and whipped cream. The top layer, I used sliced fresh mango and pour mango jelly on top. My husband loved the mango and the whipped cream but he thought the cake was a bit too dense. I'm not happy with the cake as well but love the whipped cream. It was my first time using fresh cream and whipped it. The secret of beautiful whipped cream is keep on whipping :-)

Simple lunch box idea

My goodness...I ran out of idea for my children lunch's boxes. With this lunch box, I used wholemeal bread, mini frankfurt, cheese, butter, lingon jam, baking paper and gift ribbon. I boiled the mini frankfurt, trimmed all the crust from the bread then spread butter, lingon berry jam finally assembled the bread into a mini sausage roll/ hot dog. :-) simple and easy and the most important my children loved them...hope I'll have a better idea next time...

Chocolate Tiger Roll Cake

Another trial on swiss roll. This is a good recipe and it produces good roll. I roll the cake while it was still hot and let it cool. It didn't crack at all but the problem came when I was unrolling the cake to spread some strawberry jam. The cake was starting to crack and stuck to the paper...I was panicked but luckily I still had another layer of cake to wrap around.

Cake roll

300 grm egg whites

225 grm caster sugar (I reduced the sugar)

1/2 tsp cream of tartar

135 ml vegetable oil

140 grm flour

35 grm corn flour

25 grm cocoa powder

125 grm egg yolks

Tiger roll

125 grm egg yolks

10 corn flour

50 grm caster sugar

15 ml vegetable oil

strawberry jam/any spread you prefer

1. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar to soft peak. Add sugar in few stages and keep on beating until stiff peak. Leave it aside.

2. In low speed beat milk and oil. At medium speed, beat in flour, corn flour, and cocoa powder. Slowly add in egg yolk and keep on beating at high speed until thick and fluffy.

3. Using spatula slowly add in the egg whites mixture into the flour mixture. Make sure they all mix well.

4. Pour the mixture into a 30x30cm prepared pan. Bake in 200C oven for 15 minutes or until cook.

5. Remove from oven and unmold the cake into the non stick mat. Roll and let it cool. Once cool spread

the strawberry jam and re-rolled the cake.

6. Tiger roll: Beat eggs and sugar until thick and fluffy. Slowly add in corn flour.

7. Add oil into the mixture and mix well.

8. Pour the mixture into a 30x40x2cm prepared pan. Bake in 200C oven for 5 minutes or until golden brown.

9. Removed from oven and un-mold. Spread jam and put the cake roll onto the tiger roll then roll the tiger roll over the cake. Let it cool and ready to serve.

Say It with Roses

These cupcakes were jaffa flavour (jaffa is similar to mud cake but it uses freshly squeeze orange juice and orange rind. It tastes much better than mud cake). All decorations were fondant.

The cupcakes were covered with ivory fondant then decorated with small flowers in ivory and light pink. The purple roses were the main decoration.

These cupcake were iced with swiss meringue buttercream coloured in purple and decorated with ivory fondant roses and some cachous. In my opinion, swiss meringue buttercream taste better than buttercream. They are less sweet and taste better (they kind of melt in the mouth).

Roses...always represent romantic, mystery, love and beauty. I love roses, love looking at them and love making them.

I have been practicing making roses but never get it perfect...I want them to look real. The more I do the more I know how 'Mighty is our God'...There are thousand or even million types of flowers that God created with just one command. The roses that I made were petal by petal and they still not perfect. I feel so small and my God is so big...but I feel secure that I have such a Mighty God that love me and protect me. Hope you feel the same.
